Which Pull Stud Fits My Machine? Haas, Mazak, FANUC ROBODRILL, Brother, Okuma, Doosan and More

Machine builders do not all use the same pull stud. Some use a standard MAS-BT, JIS, DIN or ANSI stud; others, like Haas, Mazak and DMG MORI, use their own design. This table lists, per builder, the stud named in the builder's documents or in published tooling catalogues, with the source, and the closest PTP range.

Three things to check before you order

  • Head angle. MAS 403 Type I (P30T-1, P40T-1, P50T-1) is 45°, Type II (P30T-2, P40T-2, P50T-2) is 60°. 90° studs are a maker standard. The JIS B 6339 knob is called 15° in US and European catalogues and 75° in Japanese ones: the same part.
  • Head shape. There are three different 45° CAT40 heads: the ANSI/ASME B5.50 knob (Ø18.8 mm / 0.740 in), the MAS-I style head Haas uses on its CT stud (Ø15 mm / 0.590 in), and Mazak's short stud on M16.
  • Thread and coolant. BT30 M12, BT40 M16, BT50 M24; CAT40 5/8"-11. Through-spindle coolant needs a stud with a bore, and some builders specify their own coolant studs.

Pull studs by machine builder

What each builder's documents, or the tooling catalogues named on each card, say. Always confirm with your machine manual or the old stud before ordering.

Haas pull studs

CT40, BT40, SK40 (DIN 40); BT30; CT50, BT50

45° only (Haas's spindle label crosses out 90°). CT40: Haas's own CT stud, 45° head Ø15 mm (0.590 in) on 5/8"-11. BT40 and SK40: M16, 45°. BT30: M12, 45°.

A standard ANSI CAT40 knob (head Ø18.8 mm / 0.740 in) is not the Haas CT stud. Haas tightening torque: 30 ft-lb (30 taper), 65 ft-lb (40 taper), 85 ft-lb (50 taper).

DN Solutions (Doosan) pull studs

BT40, CAT40, DIN 40 (DNM series)

PS806 "modified DIN / DIN 69872 #40": 15° head, M16 (CAT40: 5/8"-11).

A modified DIN stud: compare every dimension with the drawing before ordering a standard DIN 69872 stud.

Makino pull studs

BT40, BT50; CAT40 (US)

Depends on the model: a1 / A / V series, J55 / J88, D300 / D500 / D800Z use the JIS 15° type; BNC / FNC / MC, SF64, A55 / A66 / A88 use MAS-I 45°.

Find the series in the table first, then the stud.

DMG MORI (Japan-built) pull studs

BT40, BT50; BT30

Japan-built BT40 / BT50 (NV, NH, NVX, NHX, NT ...): a builder-specific 90° stud, not MAS. BT30 (Milltap): MAS-I 45°.

German-built DMU / DMC machines (SK40, HSK-A63) were not covered by a builder document.

Mitsubishi / OKK pull studs

BT40, BT50

Mitsubishi: BT40 MAS-I 45°, BT50 MAS-II 60°. OKK: BT40 MAS-I 45° on most models; 90° on MCV-350/410, PCH-400/500, HPV400 and MPH-400.

OKK BT50 studs are mostly 90°.

Hurco pull studs

CAT40 (US); SK40 (Europe)

CAT40: ANSI/ASME B5.50 45°, 5/8"-11. SK40: a Hurco 45° stud (M16, head Ø15 mm), not the 15° DIN 69872 stud.

No Hurco document was found; BT40 sources disagree.

PTP makes pull studs to MAS-BT (45°, 60° and 90°), JIS B6339, DIN 69872 and ANSI/ASME B5.50, and makes retention knobs to the machine builder's own drawing, so builder-specific studs (Haas CT, Mazak, Doosan PS806, Mori-type 90°) can be made to your sample or drawing.

Questions about pull studs by machine

Which pull stud does a Haas machine use?

Haas machines take 45° pull studs only. 40-taper BT and SK (DIN 40) spindles use M16 studs; CT40 spindles use Haas's own CT stud with a 15 mm (0.590 in) 45° head on a 5/8"-11 thread. Haas lists tightening torques of 30 ft-lb (30 taper), 65 ft-lb (40 taper) and 85 ft-lb (50 taper). Source: Haas RD0074.

Can I use a standard CAT40 retention knob on a Haas CT40?

Not without checking. The ANSI/ASME B5.50 CAT40 knob has a 0.740 in (18.8 mm) head; the Haas CT stud has a MAS-I style 0.590 in (15 mm) head. Use the stud your machine's drawbar is built for.

What do MAS P40T-1 and P40T-2 mean?

They are MAS 403 pull stud types for BT40: P40T-1 is Type I with a 45° head, P40T-2 is Type II with a 60° head, both on an M16 thread. P30T (BT30, M12) and P50T (BT50, M24) follow the same pattern. 90° studs are listed by Japanese tooling makers as maker standard, not as a MAS 403 type.

Is a 15° pull stud the same as a 75° pull stud?

Yes. The JIS B 6339 knob is called 75° in Japanese catalogues and 15° in US and European catalogues. It is the same part.

Which pull stud fits a FANUC ROBODRILL?

BT30 with a MAS 403 P30T-1 (45°) stud on an M12×1.75 thread, according to FANUC's ROBODRILL brochure. For the centre-through coolant spindle, FANUC refers to each tooling supplier's ROBODRILL stud.

Which pull stud does a Mazak use?

Mazak BT40 and BT50 machines use Mazak's own short 45° stud, not a MAS stud: on BT40 it is 44.1 mm long with an 18.8 mm knob on M16. US machines with CAT40 holders use the ANSI 45° knob on 5/8"-11; check the thread, because some catalogues list an M16 version.
